Caudex plants
A caudex plant is a plant which produces a thickened base to the trunk (a bulge) or to the stem bases. The caudex, the thickened part, can be either underground or close to the ground, and can be seen on many varieties of plants, such as the Desert Rose (Adenium), the Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea), and the Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium). The caudex is often swollen as it stores water, making caudex plants excellent for water saving gardens, or as a drought resistant plant.
