Beaucarnea species consist of 20 evergreen trees and shrubs, and are found in arid regions from southern USA to Mexico and Guatemala. They are closely related to Yucca and all have long, grass-like leaves. Trunks become bulbous and swollen and have thick bark.

Guatemalensis is a fast growing, slender, tree sized ‘ponytail’ with a swollen base. It grows up to 5m tall, and the base could get up to 4 meters wide. Leaves are long, curly and straplike, and arranged in a crown like Beaucarnea recurvata, but the leaves of young plants have an attractive purple tinge.

Ponytails can be grown outside in warm, dry and frost-free areas. In cooler areas plants can be grown in greenhouses, as bonsai specimens, or as indoor pot plants. Do not overwater and plant in well-draining soil. Propagate by seeds or offsets in spring.

Common names: Red ponytail, Guatemala Ponytail

Size: medium plants, 20-30cm tall
