The Fakey, or Ambositra Palm is a beautiful palm which grows 5-7m tall. It can be solitary or clumping, but solitary palms appear more common. This Palm is endangered in its natural habitat (Madagascar) and there may only be a few palms left in the wild.
Like other Dypsis palms, Dypsis ambositrae 'fakey' (or 'Fine Leaf' as this variety is sometimes calles) is very tough. It has to be, coming from Madagascar where it is icy cold in winter and burning hot in summer. Coming from these types of conditions, the Ambositra Palm should be able to handle a few degrees of frost, making it a great palm for cold climate tropical gardening.
Young Ambositrae palms have a very ornamental bronze colouring to the leaves and stem. These palms are fast growing as an added benefit, and should be grown in a sunny position, in well draining soil.
